Experience the exhilaration of being out on the ocean.

No crowds or traffic. Just salt air and infinite sea!

Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales, Killer Whales and Pilot Whales migrate along the coastline each year and come in very close to Montague Island – probably because the continental shelf is closer to the coastline here than in most other places on the eastern seaboard.

Between September and November, we run whale watching cruises, to view these gentle giants as they nurse their calves along the coast back to the Antarctic waters. Whales are often seen feeding and breeching, sometimes within metres of the vessel, as although we are restricted as to how close we can go to them, sometimes their curiousity brings them very close to us.

Our whale-sighting success rate for the last five years has been 95%

All year around you can cruise out to Montague Island and hear a few tales about life at a lighthouse. If the sea permits, you may circumnavigate the island and see it and the buildings as the passing ships see it.

What is the legend of the island?

Whilst out there you can visit the island’s migrating fur seal colony , which in its peak numbers up to fifteen hundred and there’s rarely less than 100. Enjoy these animals as they swim within feet of the vessel and watch the youngsters as they playfully leap out of the water. Dolphins are often found on the way to and from the island. They just love riding the bow wave of the vessel and are regular little show-offs. With our walk around bow you can lean out the front over them. There is no feeling like it!

There is a huge variety of bird life. The most spectacular of these is the mighty Sea Eagle, which feeds on and around the island. Thousands of Shearwater nest on the island and skim over the surrounding ocean. Other species are Albatross, Cormorants, Gannets, various gulls and many more. On some days a penguin will pop its head out of the water just to see what is going on.

The walk-around bow on the boat and taking a maximum of 12 passengers means that you never feel crowded and can get a good look at the wildlife- whether it is seals, dolphins, whales or birds -You can also hear all the tales and info. from our knowledgeable staff and all from the comfort of the boat!

Outside whale watching season, your cruise could include a short swim or fish.
